IoMP 160: Sleep Token - Gimmick or Genius?
Few bands have exploded in popularity over the past few years quite like Sleep Token. Arena tours. Viral moments. Rabid fanbase. Endless praise.
So naturally...
We had to ask the question:
Are they actually geniuses... or is the gimmick doing most of the heavy lifting?
That's exactly what Collin and Tom tackle in this week's episode of the Influencers of Metal Podcast.
The conversation quickly turns into one of the most divided discussions we've had on Gimmick or Genius. Tom admits there are several Sleep Token songs he genuinely enjoys and understands why people connect with them. Collin...well...let's just say he's considerably less convinced.
One of the biggest surprises? Neither of us feels like we fully understand what Sleep Token's actual gimmick is supposed to be. Is it sci-fi? Religious symbolism? Lore? Anonymous characters? Something else entirely? … That’s not rhetorical, we’re genuinely asking.
That leads into a larger discussion about whether mysterious presentation automatically makes a band more interesting, or whether the music has to completely sell the concept.
As always, this episode isn't about declaring anyone "wrong." It's simply two lifelong metal fans sharing honest opinions and inviting respectful discussion from listeners—even if you're a die-hard Sleep Token fan.
