IoMP 195: Alice In Chains – Are They Rock or Metal?
Collin & Tom

When you think of grunge, you probably think of flannel shirts, Seattle, and the alternative rock explosion of the 1990s. But what happens when a grunge band starts sounding heavy enough to share the stage with some of metal's biggest names?

That's where Alice in Chains come in.

Known for their dark atmosphere, crushing riffs, and the unmistakable voice of Layne Staley, Alice in Chains have always occupied an interesting place in rock history. They're undeniably grunge, but their sound has frequently pushed the boundaries of what that label can encompass.

In this episode of the Influencers of Metal Podcast, Collin and Tom tackle another instalment of “Are They Rock or Metal?”, this time putting Alice in Chains on trial.

Collin recalls seeing the band perform alongside Korn in 2019, while Tom explores whether their heavier material could justify calling them alternative metal.

Can a band be unmistakably grunge while still crossing into metal territory? And where exactly is that dividing line?

Our favourite duo have their opinions, but the answer might not be as straightforward as you'd expect.

Hit play and join Collin and Tom as they decide whether Alice in Chains belong in the world of rock, or of metal.

Plus, stick around to discover which legendary band will be getting the “Are They Rock or Metal?” treatment for Christmas!
