Exclusive Documentary Premiere: Beekeeper's "Lord of the Bees" Tour Part I
When you think of heavy thrash metal that peels away at the skin of your eyeballs from its sheer power and visceral sound, who do you think of? Slayer? Annihilator? Whatever the hell your neighbour puts on when his house guests stop by and are never seen again? … I had a point, where was I going with this? Oh yeah, that’s right! Well, now it’s time to add a new band to that list. A three piece annihilating beast known only as Beekeeper comes to us from San Diego, California. Assuming they got that name as a “Bee Movie” meme before it became a meme, since their formation in 2010 they’ve been tearing up the underground metal scene with their aggressive sound that can only be described as “the mosh pit made my limbs numb”. Starting off as a two piece between two friends Ally Levine and Dylan Marks, they gained notable traction in the underground California Thrash scene pretty quickly, and once their full-time bass player Adam Wollach joined the band, there was no stopping them.
Back in 2017, they were finally able to release their debut album Slaves to the Nothing, which in terms of critical reception, fans have been nothing but supportive and probably destroying their bedrooms due to a self-inflicted mosh pit. Can’t wait for concerts to come back!
Speaking of which, back in 2019 (when you could do such a thing), the band embarked on their tour “Lord of the Bees”. They played shows across some of Southwestern USA (California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada) where the rest of the states could feel their brand of “melt at the skin” thrash, like that one scene from Indiana Jones (I’m not going to tell you what scene or what movie… you already know it). During the tour, while they were keeping the gain up to 11, they were also keeping the camera rolling, filming the band having fun when they’re not thrashing out. All this culminating in a two part documentary that shows the fun, the shows, and the constant state of “why did you put that on in the car Dylan!?” No spoilers here, you’ll just have to watch the first part below:
As for their debut album, the band has still been gaining traction in the underground metal scene, even getting themselves a chance to continue releasing their music in the form of music videos. The most recent of which comes to us from their album opener “Vargas”, which couldn’t be more classic thrash metal in the modern era if they had Tom Araya as a cameo. If you’re still looking for your fix of some shredding, visceral thrash metal, then you can check out the music video below.
Check out Beekeeper, and stay tuned May 13th on themetalrobot.com for the second part of their documentary.
