IoMP 177: 6 Favourite American Bands (Described by 2 Canadians)
Well… the timing on this one is a little awkward.
With Canada-U.S. tensions making headlines, two Canadians have decided this is apparently the perfect time to dedicate an entire episode to how much they love American metal bands. Welcome to the Influencers of Metal Podcast.
Continuing our ongoing series of 6’s, Collin and Tom are heading south of the border to each name six of their favourite American bands. No objective rankings, no attempt to determine the “greatest American metal bands of all time” — just the bands that have earned a permanent place in their personal listening rotations.
And the two hosts take very different routes to get there.
Collin wastes little time bringing out the thrash, representing both generations of the genre with Anthrax and Warbringer while also giving a spot to one of death metal’s most important bands: Death.
Tom’s choices head in a much more modern direction. Trivium and Avenged Sevenfold represent two bands that have played major roles in his metal fandom, while L.A. prog-power metal band In Virtue earns a spot as a much more recent discovery.
But this is Influencers of Metal, so naturally the conversation doesn’t stay focused for long.
Somewhere along the way, Tom exposes some rather questionable knowledge of a band’s geography — particularly when thrash metal is involved — and a discussion about American bands somehow makes everyone hungry as the conversation drifts into fast-food burgers and pizza joints.
From thrash and death metal to progressive, power and modern metal, this episode is a celebration of some of the bands that prove our neighbours to the south know how to make things heavy.
